Wirral students learn how they have helped Ugandan children

STUDENTS from a Wirral school have heard first-hand how money they have raised has helped some of Uganda’s poorest children.
Guests of honour at the Birkenhead School in Oxton were two directors of schools in Antioch and Masaka which have benefited from major fund-raising campaigns in Wirral.
Between them Fred Ssendi and Stephen SSonkho run two schools for a total of 850 children aged from 4 to 14.
Birkenhead School was the first port of call for the pair who are on a two-week visit to the UK.
Fred explained how important the financial help from pupils and others in the area had been.
He said: “Our children are very, very poor. They rely on us for so much, not just education, but also for food, clothing and medical help.
"Generous donations have enabled us to provide some children with breakfast and this has assisted their educational development and even improved health to such an extent that we have been able to field sports teams for the first time.
“It is wonderful to look round a school like Birkenhead. This is really inspiring and something we can aim for long into the future.”
Over the past few years, Birkenhead School has contributed more than £1,600 to the Rock of Joy Trust which supports the Ugandan schools.
