BIRKENHEAD MP Frank Field dropped in to the University Academy Birkenhead to open a new part of the school.

The Labour Member of Parliament visited the school to officially open the Year 7 Base on Friday.

As part of the event, pupils spoke about their first impressions of UAB and also organised tours of the Base which has been described as a ‘school within a school.’

Principal Geraint Parry said: "The Year 7 Base was created to ease the transition between junior and secondary school and to give our youngest students the confidence boost they so deserve and need.

"All Year 7 students are taught for the majority of their time in the Base which is like ‘a school within a school’. Here they benefit from having their own entrance, recreation area, and a lunchtime that is separate from the remainder of the school.

"This exciting new development has already helped our Y7 students to quickly settle in and has given them a flying start."

Unless things have changed recently, would not an alternative headline to this story be:-

"Chair of Governors visits his own school" ?
