Car park barrier collapses and traps woman in car Car park barrier collapses and traps woman in car

Firefighters used cutting equipment to free a woman trapped after a barrier hit her car windscreen and passed through the vehicle and struck her.

The 50-year-old was taken to hospital where she received treatment for injuries to her upper arm.

The fire service was called to Noctorum Avenue in Birkenhead on Thursday, September 6, at around 5.10pm.

Fire officers say it is thought string holding the barrier in place had failed causing it to swing out into the entrance to a car park.

Appliances from Birkenhead and Wallasey Community Fire Stations attended the incident accompanied by the search and rescue team, based at Croxteth.

The woman driver was trapped in her car by the barrier. She was freed by 5.35pm.

Chief Fire Officer Dan Stephens, who also attended the incident, said: "Firefighters were on scene within minutes of the call and worked quickly and efficiently to free her.

"They used their specialist cutting equipment to remove the barrier from the car while paramedics were treating and assessing the 50-year-old woman.

"She was carefully removed from the vehicle and taken to a hospital in Liverpool.”
