THE boss of the property giant behind Wirral’s dockland regeneration programme has topped the region’s Rich List.

Peel chairman John Whittaker’s wealth is calculated at £2.2bn - up from £2.1bn in 2011.

The group sold the Trafford Centre to Capital Shopping last year and is also leading the multi-billion pound Liverpool and Wirral Waters regeneration project.

Manchester United star Wayne Rooney and his media personality wife Coleen have stormed into the 2012 Rich List of regional magazine “North West Business Insider.”

The duo are one of 14 new entries in this year's countdown of the region's richest business people with their combined wealth valued at £58m.

Wages and endorsements take Rooney’s annual earnings to £17m while his wife has featured on the cover of Vogue and fronted advertising campaigns for Asda and Littlewoods.

Other new entries in the 2012 list include Charles Sharland (£88m), head of Warrington-based software business AppSense; Dipak Thakrar (£46m), boss of Salford-based exporter Star Perfumes; and Bolton comedian Peter Kay (£40m) who is involved in three companies with net assets of £17.2m.

Peel’s website describes the company’s philosophy as being “built around recycling capital over the longer term in the regions and communities in which we work. The shareholders of Peel continue to be committed to plough all profits and shareholder value into these regions and communities, thereby increasing economic activity and environmental and social benefits.”
