Wirral initiative boosts awareness of loan sharks
3:17pm Wednesday 5th September 2012 in News
EVENTS to raise awareness of illegal and dangerous money lending enjoyed huge success, say organisers.
Loan Shark Awareness Week in Wirral took place in a wide range of community venues in partnership with Wirral Council, Wirral Partnership Homes, Wirral Credit Union and the England Illegal Money-Lending Team.
Around 1,000 people attended events including fun days at Birkenhead Park, advice sessions for people with financial worries and benefit health checks.
Councillor Brian Kenny, Wirral council’s cabinet member for the environment, said: “These events were extremely well attended, so congratulations must go to the officers from Wirral Council and our partners who organised and took part in them.
“Loan sharks are dangerous individuals who are entirely motivated by greed, and who ruin lives. Raising awareness will help us to keep on catching these criminals.
“I would strongly recommend anyone who has been approached by a loan shark to report them in confidence by calling 0300 555 2222.”
