TRANMERE kept up their unbeaten start to the season with an impressive 4-0 win over Colchester United rocketing Rovers to the giddy heights of League One leaders.
Striker Jake Cassidy’s was a hat-trick hero and a strike from Zoumana Bakayogo gave manager Ronnie Moore's side the points at Prenton Park and took them to the top of the table.
After Colchester threatened to take the lead, Rovers responded well. Andy Robinson kept possession on the left side of the area, twisted his way to the touchline and whipped in a left foot cross.
Cassidy was fastest to react, getting in front of a defender and goalkeeper Cousins to head home from close range for his first goal of the season.
Rovers led at the interval following a fairly even first 45 minutes but came out flying in the second half and quickly added their second and third goals.
The fourth came with just over ten minutes to go and stretched the club's unbeaten home run to 13 games.
Paying tribute to Jake, Ronnie said: “He worked very hard and got the balls inside the box. The squad was rampant in the second half.”
Jake said: "The lads were fantastic. Colchester probably edged the first half but we got back into it in the second half and kicked on from there.
"It was good to get the first but I didn't expect to get the hat-trick. When the chances come your way you've just got to put them away and I did that today.”
The result put Rovers at the top of the table with ten points.
Ronnie said: “It’s great to be where we are - if only it was next May!
"We’re only four games in, so nothing’s really been achieved.
“But if we can continue to work as hard as we have been, hopefully we’ll still be top of the table at the end the season.”
Tomorrow night, Rovers face Port Vale in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy. Tranmere resume League One action on Saturday against Crewe Alexandra at the Alexandra Stadium with kick-off at 3pm.
