Boxing legend Mike Tyson to visit Wirral

Boxing legend Mike Tyson Boxing legend Mike Tyson

BOXING legend Mike Tyson will pay a visit to Wirral next month. The heavyweight champion of the world will call in at a series of local boxing gyms to hold special master-classes with youngsters. His visit to the area is also set to include a Sunday lunch at the Devonshire House Hotel, Liverpool on October 7. And organiser and former boxer Kenny Rainford said the event could go some way to inspire the next generation’s boxing stars. He said: “When I was training, my main inspiration was Earnie Shavers and I really looked up to him and that is how so many people – of all ages – look at Mike. “I have met him before and he is an absolute gentleman and always eager to help people. He will work with these young boxers when he comes here and hopefully show them how to stay on the right path and not go down the wrong route.” Although the locations of the Wirral boxing gyms are not being made public for security reasons, tickets are available to attend the lunch earlier in the day. Tickets are £75 and the event begins at 12 noon. For more information, call Kenny on 07887721306 or the Devonshire House Hotel on 0151 264 6600.

Is this the same Mike Tyson who tried to bite off Holyfield's ear and was disqualified as a result?

Is a convicted rapist a suitable role model?

A convicted rapist who will be allowed to have access to kids in a gym. I wonder if he's had a CRB check with wirral council. He's also been jailed for road rage and being in possession of class A drugs. This man is a great role mode. The Globe have published a story on this site that calls a man from oxton a pervert, because he took pics up womens skirts, but Mike Tyson is a ring legend. He should be signing the sex offenders register instead of autographs.

The man is a dangerous criminal - why is he allowed here??? If he were a Brit, the Yanks would refuse him access, as do loads of other countries!! The guy is a perv and should be banned from our land.

I'm quite sure Australia refused him entry. Gary Glitter will be doing a tour of wirral next

Who in the right mind would pay 75 quid to line the pocket of a rapist. A rapist is a Rapist whether it's mike Tyson or Joe Bloggs. If any other person commits rape, they would never work again or be allowed near kids etc, but because it's Mike Tyson their seems to be an exception. Would people be so keen to see him if he raped one of their family members. At the end of the day Desiree Washington is some body's daughter, sister etc. Hang your heads in shame if you decide to support this circus.

Can't add anything that hasn't already been said. However, how many UK Convicted RAPIST'S get VISAS to visit the USA - Who in our CARING Government thought it was appropriate to grant him one to come here.

Yup! Reading the posts I get the impression Mr.Tyson isn't really welcome in Wirral. Trouble is, who's going to tell him.

welcome or not, it'll still sell out for this freak because people seem to think it's ok cos it's Mike Tyson and he's not really a rapist, he just committed a one off rape. I would rather give 75 quid to charity before line his pockets to probably snort up his nose.

I think that statement says it all about the organiser as well, cos I wouldn't want to meet Mike Tyson and then shout it from the roof tops. Would he do the same if he met Gary Glitter?

Gutless MP's gutless councillors, they are that eager to promote so called celebrities as role models, lets see who will be queuing up to shake his hand, lets see if any of our councillors accept hospitality tickets to any of the venues,we have enough home grown perverts without importing them, and for those that might be tempted ask yourself this would you be happy for your daughter or granddaughter
to be any where near this man and I use the term man lightly.

To be fair, CRB checks are nothing to do with WBC, unless its a council orginised event, I assume the events are being held in private Gyms.
.
It is the responsibility of UKBA and The Home Office for his siutability to enter the country and the event orginisers to risk assess the events and CRB check individuals if needed.
.
I fear that a CRB check may not be required as he will not be placed in any position of responsibility of any minors or vunerable people.
.
All that said, I agree with all of the sentiments in this thread, he should not have been permitted entry into the UK in the first place and anyone who suggests that this man is anything short of monster is just wrong.

I understand it is not WBC that is promoting the events unless of course they run any of the venues, but they are condoning the decision by their silence, as I said previously lets see who features shaking hands with him in the local news, surely non of our councillors are that hard up for self promotion.

I have a valid CRB but was refused entrance in to a boxing venue in Birkenhead just to watch my son train. It will be interesting to see if Mike Tyson will be visiting this particular gym to give his so called masterclass.

A CRB is only valid on the day it is printed, (although there is no official length on valididty, some NHS Trusts accept Enhanced CRB checks less than 3 months old).
.
In your situation you have been a victim of someone who either does not know the rules or has been a bit over zelious, you do not need a CRB to visit a venue/school etc, you only need a CRB if you are working with and/or being placed in a position of responsibility with children and vunerable adults.
.
Either way, he should not have been allowed into the country.

It is completely and utterly wrong and unacceptable to honour a convicted rapist. He should not even be allowed in the country - that's our appalling Border Control - but he certainly should NOT be allowed in Wirral - Wirral does not welcome rapists - we have enough of our own and to showcase this man as a role model quite frankly makes me sick - it is an insult to rape victims everywhere and should not be allowed.

A respected and proffesional champion kick boxer.

Have some respect for this man.

He could be the Virgin Mary for all I care, just becuase he is well known in some parts of the community, does not mean he can command or deserve respect in another. I personaly have no feelings either positive nor negative towards him, mainly becuase I have never heard of him, I will never meet him.
.
However I think he has made an error in judgement in associating himself with Mr Tyson.

As a fan of the sport of boxing, one of its biggest stars coming to our small peninsula is very exciting.

Now as I read all of the comments nearly 100% of them are negative and reflect the PAST of this boxing legend.

Now I do not condone rapists in anyway, so before you jump on that, don't.

What you need to consider is, has he changed? The answer is a clear YES.

He is a reformed character, has realised his bad behaviour in the past is 100% not acceptable and tried to move on with his life.

Like many criminals in this country he was given a second chance, and just because he is a famous, and may I add a hell of boxer, doesn't that mean he too should be allowed a second chance.

I assume next on the agenda is when he bit of Holyfield's ear in the ring, which I see has been mentioned as well.

Guess what people, Evander forgave him, and you know why? Because the sport of boxing got huge publicity from it.

Look at David Haye and Dereck Chisora, their fight took place after they attacked each other in a press conference in Germany. By your judgements on people they should of never been allowed back into the country and there British.

I bet also that you are all the type of people screaming for young kids to be off the streets. Well don't you think that a visit from one of the biggest stars of boxing to have ever graced the sport coming to our parts is going to inspire these youngsters to hit the gym?

No you don't think of that of course, all you see is a man with a past and don't allow him a chance.

Have an open mind, and reply what you like, this is all I have to say on the matter.

And if Mike Tyson may read this, welcome to Wirral and I hope you enjoy your time.

Positive thinker says...

It will turn out a flop because the parents of the kids that attend these
clubs that Mike the beast is going to visit will keep there kids away.As for any adults who want to pay £75 to go
And see the freak well that's upto them

I have never heard of the legendary Kenny Rainford either, but he must be a nice man inviting Tyson to the Wirral to teach our children, I take it this will all be in aid of charity, maybe rape victims, victims of violence,I mean no one would wish to make money from such an event ...would they?

The gym locations are being kept secret for "security reasons".
.
Mmmm - I'd guess that people anticipated there would be opposition to the visit and are keeping the venues secret so that protestors cannot demonstrate outside.
.

If we want young people to have sporting role models I'd rather any kids of mine looked towards Ellie Simmonds, Beth Tweddle than Mike Tyson. Whether he is reformed or not I have no idea BUT until he has proved that he is and he is recognised for turning his life around I don't see him as a good role model for anybody.
.

Uncatom makes a good point - if the point of his visit is to inform people about staying on the right path and not make money any profits should go to charities working with the victims of crime.

Desiree Washington did'nt have the luxury of "freedom of choice" when Tyson raped her, bloodtub you speak of respect a word that unfortunately has had its meaning misused by the young of today I suppose you could say we're dissing Mike Tyson instead of having to respect and bow down to thugs and drug dealers and rapists, if you wish to waste your money then yes thats your choice, but dont condem those people with morals.

bickyboy says...
8:30pm Wed 5 Sep 12

You have to earn respect: it's not to be given of right just because people should have heard of you. Mike Tyson has served time for his crimes, and to my mind many of the comments above do not recognise that and are therefore unnecessarily harsh. The man may not be the kind of guy you would invite to your children's birthday party or allow to go out with your sister, but he paid for the wrongs he did. There are a lot of people walking around out there who have done serious wrongs and have never been punished; either because they were never caught or because clever lawyers got them off; but Mike Tyson's faults are out in the open for all to see, and yet he is willing to remain in the public eye and risk his current activities being tainted by his past, to risk being portrayed as a danger to women because, presumably, he thinks his activities may help some young people avoid the trouble that dogged his early life. If the authors of the harshest comments believe that rehabilitation is a word that has any meaning then there should be some attempt to recognise that.
The less famous person mentioned above is not an individual whom I personally respect, and nor am I ever likely to. My reasons for that are unconnected with his sporting or professional achievements and activities.

Ben Beaconsfield says...
8:28am Thu 6 Sep 12

So Tyson is doing this for purely altruistic reasons then, bickyboy? No money changing hands for this guest appearance?

bickyboy says...
12:34pm Thu 6 Sep 12

You know, of course that money IS changing hands, so I slightly resent the sarcasm.
However, I would say this: the fact that Tyson may be charging for his services doesn't necessarily make them any less valuable to his audience; nor does the exchange of money detract from the fact that he's paid for his crimes.

Positive thinker says...

I'm a kid who has just started to do boxing in Wirral. When i heard about Mike Tyson coming to the Wirral that obviously boosted my confidence for a boxer to come here. But now the Government are trying to stop him coming her which dropped my confidence. I know what he has done in the past but he served his time in jail. So i would be really good if he did come and the Government are just trying to make Wirral more boring.
