Boxing legend Mike Tyson to visit Wirral
8:00am Saturday 1st September 2012 in News By Stephanie Cureton
Boxing legend Mike Tyson
BOXING legend Mike Tyson will pay a visit to Wirral next month. The heavyweight champion of the world will call in at a series of local boxing gyms to hold special master-classes with youngsters. His visit to the area is also set to include a Sunday lunch at the Devonshire House Hotel, Liverpool on October 7. And organiser and former boxer Kenny Rainford said the event could go some way to inspire the next generation’s boxing stars. He said: “When I was training, my main inspiration was Earnie Shavers and I really looked up to him and that is how so many people – of all ages – look at Mike. “I have met him before and he is an absolute gentleman and always eager to help people. He will work with these young boxers when he comes here and hopefully show them how to stay on the right path and not go down the wrong route.” Although the locations of the Wirral boxing gyms are not being made public for security reasons, tickets are available to attend the lunch earlier in the day. Tickets are £75 and the event begins at 12 noon. For more information, call Kenny on 07887721306 or the Devonshire House Hotel on 0151 264 6600.

The man is a dangerous criminal - why is he allowed here??? If he were a Brit, the Yanks would refuse him access, as do loads of other countries!! The guy is a perv and should be banned from our land.

The organiseer of this event says:- “I have met him before and he is an absolute gentleman and always eager to help people. He will work with these young boxers when he comes here and hopefully show them how to stay on the right path and not go down the wrong route.”
Is this the same Mike Tyson who tried to bite off Holyfield's ear and was disqualified as a result?

.
It is the responsibility of UKBA and The Home Office for his siutability to enter the country and the event orginisers to risk assess the events and CRB check individuals if needed.
.
I fear that a CRB check may not be required as he will not be placed in any position of responsibility of any minors or vunerable people.
.
All that said, I agree with all of the sentiments in this thread, he should not have been permitted entry into the UK in the first place and anyone who suggests that this man is anything short of monster is just wrong.

To be fair, CRB checks are nothing to do with WBC, unless its a council orginised event, I assume the events are being held in private Gyms.

In your situation you have been a victim of someone who either does not know the rules or has been a bit over zelious, you do not need a CRB to visit a venue/school etc, you only need a CRB if you are working with and/or being placed in a position of responsibility with children and vunerable adults.
.
Either way, he should not have been allowed into the country.

Now as I read all of the comments nearly 100% of them are negative and reflect the PAST of this boxing legend.
Now I do not condone rapists in anyway, so before you jump on that, don't.
What you need to consider is, has he changed? The answer is a clear YES.
He is a reformed character, has realised his bad behaviour in the past is 100% not acceptable and tried to move on with his life.
Like many criminals in this country he was given a second chance, and just because he is a famous, and may I add a hell of boxer, doesn't that mean he too should be allowed a second chance.
I assume next on the agenda is when he bit of Holyfield's ear in the ring, which I see has been mentioned as well.
Guess what people, Evander forgave him, and you know why? Because the sport of boxing got huge publicity from it.
Look at David Haye and Dereck Chisora, their fight took place after they attacked each other in a press conference in Germany. By your judgements on people they should of never been allowed back into the country and there British.
I bet also that you are all the type of people screaming for young kids to be off the streets. Well don't you think that a visit from one of the biggest stars of boxing to have ever graced the sport coming to our parts is going to inspire these youngsters to hit the gym?
No you don't think of that of course, all you see is a man with a past and don't allow him a chance.
Have an open mind, and reply what you like, this is all I have to say on the matter.
And if Mike Tyson may read this, welcome to Wirral and I hope you enjoy your time.

Mmmm - I'd guess that people anticipated there would be opposition to the visit and are keeping the venues secret so that protestors cannot demonstrate outside.
.
If we want young people to have sporting role models I'd rather any kids of mine looked towards Ellie Simmonds, Beth Tweddle than Mike Tyson. Whether he is reformed or not I have no idea BUT until he has proved that he is and he is recognised for turning his life around I don't see him as a good role model for anybody.
.
Uncatom makes a good point - if the point of his visit is to inform people about staying on the right path and not make money any profits should go to charities working with the victims of crime.

The less famous person mentioned above is not an individual whom I personally respect, and nor am I ever likely to. My reasons for that are unconnected with his sporting or professional achievements and activities.

However, I would say this: the fact that Tyson may be charging for his services doesn't necessarily make them any less valuable to his audience; nor does the exchange of money detract from the fact that he's paid for his crimes.
