Rovers sign defender ahead of Colchester game

TRANMERE Rovers have signed Wigan Athletic defender Roman Golobart on a month's loan today.

The 20-year old is starting his fourth season at Wigan having joined from Espanyol in August 2009.

He spent the whole of last season on loan at Inverness Caledonian Thistle, helped them maintain their place in the Scottish Premier League and will be in Ronnie Moore's injury-hit squad for Rovers' League One game against Colchester at Prenton Park tomorrow afternoon.

Ronnie said: “I’m really pleased to bring Roman in from Wigan. With Ian Goodison injured, Ash Taylor picking up a knock at Aston Villa and Mark McChrystal still needing more games following his injury, we were short at the back so Roman is a welcome arrival.

“He’s a tall, dominant centre back who has good experience from his time in Scotland last season.

“Wigan rate him highly and I’m sure he’ll be a good addition to our back line.”

Tomorrow's League One fixture, which kicks off at 3pm, will be the 53rd league meeting between Rovers and Colchester, with both clubs having won 17 times.

Last season they drew 0-0 at Prenton Park with Colchester winning 4-2 at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

Ten of the last 17 games between the two have ended all square, while Rovers' most recent home win over Colchester was a 1-0 success in March 2011 thank to Enoch Showunmi's second half goal.

Players to have represented both clubs include Barry Dyson and Alec Chamberlain.

Rovers' Capital One Cup campaign ended with a 3-0 defeat by Aston Villa on Tuesday night.

The Premier League hosts took the lead through Fabian Delph late in the first half with Chris Herd and Darren Bent adding the second and third after half-time.

Villa's defence restricted Ronnie Moore's squad to mostly long range efforts throughout the 90 minutes at Villa Park.

A disappointed Ronnie Moore left Villa Park feeling his side hadn’t shown what they were capable of.

He said afterwards:”I’m disappointed as I think we can play better than that. I’m certainly disappointed in the second goal, at the time we were in the game.

“We’d tinkered with it a bit at half time and matched up their three in the middle and to get done on the counter attack…you can’t sleep as a defender, you’ve got to know who is in there.

“I just wish we could have got a goal for the crowd. In the first 20 minutes of the second half we were in the game.

"The pleasing thing for me was that not many [fans] left. You expect when the third one goes in that people get back in the car or on the bus.

"But I think they wanted to genuinely say well done to the lads for getting this trip for them. We need that support during the season.

“The fans have been fantastic since I’ve been here and hopefully we can give them something to smile about on Saturday.”
