A MEMBER of Wirral Society For The Blind and Partially Sighted has celebrated her 100th birthday.

Nina Fletcher was born in Tranmere on August 17, 1912 and has attended the society's social clubs at Ashville Lodge in Birkenhead for 22 years.

Friends joined Nina for her birthday celebrations. Wirral's Mayor and Mayoress, Cllr Gerry and Margaret Ellis attended and presented Nina with a floral arrangement, birthday card and birthday greeting from The Queen.

Betty Robinson, one of the society's founder members said: "Nina is a remarkable lady, a true Matriarch of the Society, a real character and a fountain of knowledge.

"It was only a couple of years ago, Nina would bake scones to raise money for the groups, we used to queue up to be the first in line."

Lynne Sedgwick, WSPB's development officer said: "It’s lovely to have a living piece of local history amongst us, Nina is always around to correct us on the facts of past local life."
