A SURGEON from a Wirral hospital has scooped a top award for his work teaching trainee doctors.

Mr Vijay Bhalaik, a consultant hand and upper limb surgeon at Wirral University Teaching Hospital, was presented with the Mersey Trainer of the Year award at the Mersey Orthopaedic Registrars’ Day.

Mr Bhalaik was recognised for his work in training surgical registrars and won the award following a ballot of trainees from the Northwest region. He said: “I love teaching. It’s wonderful to be nominated by the people you teach. For a teacher, that’s the best reward you can get.”

Following specialist training in shoulder and elbow surgery at the Liverpool Upper Limb Unit, he trained in reconstructive and plastic surgery of the hand at the Mersey Regional Plastic Surgery Unit and Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.

He was then selected for an advanced fellowship at the Pulvertaft Hand Centre in Derby, a world renowned unit and centre for excellence in hand surgery.

Mr Bhalaik has been a tutor in hand surgery at Wirral University Teaching Hospital for four years. He teaches on a wide range of training courses for healthcare professionals nationally and internationally and is a hand surgery tutor for the British Orthopaedic Association. An extract from his nomination statement said this about him: “He has found the energy, drive and time not only to teach on courses nationally and internationally but has also made a huge impact on local trainees. "He has worked hard to make Wirral the top choice for registrars to train in the Mersey region.

“Mr Bhalaik displays all the characteristics that you would want in a trainer – and aspire to have when you become a consultant.”

David Allison, chief executive at the trust, added: “To have received such praise from the students you teach is the ultimate professional accolade and further recognition for this Trust as a centre of excellence in teaching. Mr Bhalaik truly deserves this award.”
