Two men held at gunpoint in Birkenhead robbery

TWO men were held at gunpoint by robbers as they walked home from a night out at the weekend.

The 27-year-olds were walking along Borough Road, Birkenhead at around 5.30am on Sunday when they were confronted by two other men.

Armed with a black handgun, they demanded the men hand over their wallets.

One victim gave his wallet and mobile phone to the robbers while the other had his taken from his back pocket.

The thieves then ran off across Borough Road and down Whitford Road, police say.

Detectives have examined CCTV and believe passing motorists and a cyclist, as well as a person stood outside an Indian takeaway could offer vital information about the incident.

Detective Inspector Justin Danher, from Birkenhead CID, said: "This was an incredibly frightening incident for these two young men. All they were doing is walking home from an enjoyable night out in Birkenhead when they have been confronted by two youths with their faces covered and threatened.

“We are particularly concerned that they appear to have been armed and we are doing everything possible to catch them.

"Borough Road was pretty quiet at that time in the morning but we know that several cars and a person on a bike did pass the scene at around the time the incident happened. We also know that there were other people in the area, perhaps also at the end of their night out, that may have seen the offenders before or afterwards.

"I would ask all of those people to cast their minds back to early last Sunday morning and please call the police or Crimestoppers if they have information, however small, that could help us catch these offenders."

Call Detective Constable Liz Leck at Birkenhead CID on 0151 777 2265 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
