Hundreds ready for Hoylake 10k
HUNDREDS have now signed up for this year’s Hoylake 10k charity coastal fun run.
The event, now in its 19th year, takes place on Sunday, September 9.
All proceeds will go towards the Wednesday Special Needs Club's Soft Play Sensory Resource, which is based in Hoylake Community Centre.
So far, 270 have registered to take part and with six weeks to go, there is still plenty of time to join them.
Race secretary Carla Williams told the Globe: "For a time interest had slowed a bit, but it’s starting to build up again and the number of entries is about where we are normally at this time of year.
"There are still six weeks to go, so if you haven’t signed up yet, please do so."
The event starts outside Hoylake Community Centre in Hoyle Road at 11am.
Participants will follow a course along the promenade, dropping off the Meols embankment for a short distance, through the car park by Leasowe Lighthouse and back onto the embankment towards Leasowe Castle Hotel.
At the 5k marker, runners return back along the same route.
Last year 669 people took part, raising more than £9,000.
Putting them under starters orders was Wirral West MP Esther McVey.
First man to cross the line was James Mulvaney, 33, who finished in 34 minutes, 46 seconds.
First woman to finish was Lisa Grantham, from Wirral Athletics Club, in 37 minutes, 58 seconds.
Following last year's run, Carla Williams said: "What a turn out! It was an amazing day.
“Considering there were quite a few events taking place at the same time, such as the Great North Run, I was very pleased with the numbers.
"The money raised will be used to replace equipment in the club's soft play area and pay for any repairs that are needed.
"The weather was lovely for running with slight breeze.
"The feedback from many of the runners was it was just right for running and that they enjoyed the friendly atmosphere and that the organisation as usual was excellent.
