Drivers in Merseyside, Cheshire and North Wales are being urged to check travel conditions this afternoon and evening before using the western end of the M56, M53 and other routes around the Welsh border.

The advice from the Highways Agency follows a serious traffic accident along the M56 near its interchange with the M53.

The incident happened at 2.30pm when a lorry crossed from the westbound carriageway into the eastbound carriageway – colliding with the central reservation barrier and overturning.

The accident happened between Junction 14 and 15 and the westbound carriageway is totally shut from Junction 14.

There is no eastbound access from Junction 16 and access from the M53 onto the M56 is also currently closed.

The Highways Agency is advising drivers that the route is likely to closed for several hours for recovery and barrier repairs.

A diversion is in place between Junction 14 and 16 in both directions.

Westbound drivers leaving at Junction 14 are being asked to follow the solid triangle sign to Junction 16: eastbound drivers are being taken off at Junction 16 and should follow the hollow square sign to Junction 14.

Both diversion routes use the A5117 north of the M56.

Let us all hope that SOCIAL SERVICES AND THE POLICE, track down the woman and small child and prosecute her for endangering her child, doesnt she realise vehicles may be approaching from both directions

I agree, and once they catch her the child should be immediately taken into care and the women should serve at least 15 years for attempted murder

are you two planks off your trolley? The clue is in the headline, motorway SHUT BOTH WAYS. You can clearly see the traffic parked on the other side, on approach to the accident site. Therefore the traffic would be prevented from reaching the lady and her child!!

The carriageway might have been closed to public vehicles but still accessible to emergency and recovery vehicles. Ergo - it was not safe to be wandering around on the motorway!

Letting any child run free even on what may or may not be a closed road is wrong, there should be parenatal control over the sprogs, also what happens if a vehicle decides to drive along at high speed and is distracted by a sprog on the road and swerves hitting other vehicles.

Parents show some respect for childs lives, remember theyre the ones who put you in a care home in latter life and sometimes visit you.

A DISGRACEFUL EXAMPLE OF "PARENTING" FROM THIS WOMAN....WHAT IF SHE CHILD SUDDENLY RAN OFF INTO THE TRAFFIC...SHE SEEM A RATHER PORTLY LADY AND I DOUBT SHE WOULD REACT IN TIME,THEREFORE CAUSING MORE DELAYS WITH A HURT CHILD ON THE ROAD..ALSO SHE IS CAUSING A DISTRACTION BY ALLOWING A CHILD TO WALK ON A MOTORWAY...THIS UNUSUAL OCCURENCE MIGHT CAUSE A DRIVER TO SHUNT ANOTHER VEHICLE..THIS WOMAN CLEARLY NEEDS TO SEEK HELP AND UNDERSTAND WHAT THE POSSIBLE CONSEQUENCES OF HER ACTIONS MIGHT HAVE BEEN...SELFISH AND SELF PROMOTION AT ITS' WORST!!

She is defo in the wrong, even if the road was closed the element of risk is still there. And it caused complete chaos. The traffic jams were a nightmare, thankfully my journey home from Wirral to Chester meant that I was going against all the queues. The Welsh road was queuing from A41 to 2 Mills and then down to the Yacht on the Chester high road, and all the way from the little chef roundabout to the Molly B....not good

Simple folks, this is a picture of a motorway, and quite simply pedestrians are not allowed to walk along motorways. As for the comment about kids in cars and sunscreen, I am sorry but you are missing the point here...
