Cyclists trek from John O'Groats to Lands End for Wirral charities
3:21pm Tuesday 24th July 2012 in News By Craig Manning
TWO Wirral cyclists travelled more than 800 miles from John O’Groats to Lands End for Hoylake Cottage and Claire House Hospice.
Nigel Lanceley, 62, from Hoylake and Chris Moore, 69, from Caldy took two weeks to complete the 874-mile journey in June.
Their adventure involved taking three ferries, crossing countless bridges and pedalling through 23 counties.
Chris said “Apart from a few minor mechanical problems, one puncture and one tyre blow-out, all proceeded smoothly, give or take some unpleasantly wet weather.
“Donors have already been extremely generous but we are keeping the site open for a few more weeks in case anybody else would like to support our chosen charities -Hoylake Cottage for the care of older people and those with dementia and Claire House for the comfort of terminally ill children and their families”.
There is still time to support Nigel and Chris. To donate visit uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/LanceleyandMooreCharityBikeRide Their trip was one of a series of Summer Challenge fundraisers that have helped raise more than £10,000 for the Hoylake-based nursing home.
The charity’s own intrepid fundraiser, Sarah Green, put on her wetsuit and took part in the Great North Swim, which took place in June in Lake Windermere, in the Lake District.
The event was reduced from three days to just one, as a result of extreme weather throughout the region, and Sarah swam a mile in water which was only 16 degrees Celsius. It was the first time Sarah had ever taken part in an open water event.
The 38-year-old said “After Christmas, I decided that I needed a new challenge – open water swimming was it.
“I’ve managed to get into my wetsuit, and trained in the sea off North Wales as well as many miles in the pool.
“On the day, I was nervous as there were over 300 of us starting at the same time. But once I got into my rhythm I began to enjoy myself! “The sharks and monsters that my sons kept teasing me about didn’t materialise which was a relief!
“It has been a fantastic opportunity to get a bit fitter whilst helping a cause so close to my heart.”
