LIVERPOOL FC skipper Steven Gerrard has helped Wirral Toy Library to get back on its feet.

The Steven Gerrard Foundation has picked the registered charity to receive cash so it can reintroduce its toy lending service.

The special programme was put on hold five years ago due to funding problems but now the Library can begin to build up its stock again.

As part of the three-year funding award, £10,000 being handed to the Prenton-based charity now while the following instalments will be confirmed at a later date.

Anna Matthews from the Steven Gerrard Foundation, said: "The Steven Gerrard Foundation and Wirral Toy Library both share an important aim – improving the lives of young people in need.

"That is why we're delighted to support the charity with this funding grant which will enable it to reintroduce the unique toy lending service for which it is renowned and provide even greater support and therapy to children with complex needs."

Wirral Toy Library, which has lost its vital £50k council grant, supports local families with children who have complex needs.

Parents are then able to introduce specialist toys to their children's playtime at home.

Roy Ellis, chairman of Wirral Toy Library, said: "On behalf of the Toy Library and all of the children, parents and families it supports, I'd like to thank the Steven Gerrard Foundation for this donation.

"Every penny we raise counts as we work hard to bring the charity closer towards being financially self-sustaining and better placed to offer the provision of therapy through play to families in Merseyside."

The funding award comes as the charity announces a record-breaking £13,000 was raised at its annual Toy Library Gala Dinner, which took place on Saturday, June 30 at the Adelphi Hotel in Liverpool.

The next fundraising event to take place is a Family Fun Day, which is being held on Sunday, July 15 from 12-4pm at the Wirral Toy Library in Prenton.

There will be a fairground, donkey rides, face painting, and a bar.
