A WIRRAL bank was targeted by robbers this morning.

Officers were called to the scene at Lloyds TSB, Woodchurch Road, Birkenhead at around 9.10am.

At least two men threatened staff as they were preparing to open the bank and demanded they open the safe.

But when workers said the safe could not be opened the men, who were wearing hooded tops and scarves covering their faces, stole cash from a till.

They left, either on foot or in a car, in the direction of Woodchurch Lane.

None of the staff were injured and no weapons were seen however they were left “shaken” by their ordeal.

Now, police officers are looking for the men and the police helicopter has also been involved in the search.

Shortly after the robbery, a 50-year-old man was stopped in his car on the expressway between Runcorn in Cheshire, and Speke in Merseyside on the Liverpool-bound carriageway.

He was arrested in connection with the robbery after he was found in possession of a large amount of cash and is currently in custody at a Wirral police station.
