A PIRATE battle and treasure hunt are among the swashbuckling entertainment taking place in New Brighton tomorrow.

The borough's second "Mersey Pirate Muster" will be staged near Fort Perch Rock.

Visitors to the free family event will have a chance to join the Mersey pirate navy and watch a pirate parade.

The Pirate Muster was staged at the Albert Dock, Liverpool for two years, before moving to Wirral last year.

Setting the scene, co-creator Cathy Roberts told the Globe: "This is our fourth year, but our second year in New Brighton, and we are here to stay. It is the proper spiritual home for pirates.

"The most famous, and one of the most successful, pirates in Britain actually lived and sailed from Wallasey. His name was Fortunatus Wright.

"But for our Pirate Muster this year we are going to be introducing people to his long-lost cousin, Unfortunatus.

"He lives up to his name, because a band of pirates has sailed into the Last Chance Lagoon to celebrate the fact that they have found a map showing the location of the Black Rock Mermaid's purse.

"After a heavy night's carousing at the Devil’s Nest Tavern, they return to their ship, under the watchful eye of the Redcoats at Fort Perch Rock, only to discover that they forgotten where they've put the pirate map.

"The pirates, led by captain Calico Jack Trump, are somewhat annoyed. Captain Jack is further annoyed when he discovers Unfortunatus gambling aboard ship.

"Gambling on board was an offence under the original pirate code, so therefore Calico Jack orders that poor Unfortunatus is marooned on Groggy Island in the middle of Last Chance Lagoon.

"Our battle then ensues to rescue Unfortunates and to solve the riddle of where the Mermaid's Purse is buried. We've got a fantastic treasure hunt planned this year.

"Our explosives display promises to be even better than last year, when we 'blew up' Fort Perch Rock."

Sunday’s event runs from 12am-4pm. More details are from merseypiratemuster.com.

Proceeds from the event will go to Help For Heroes, the Royal National Lifeboat Institute and New Brighton Tidal Pool.

Alice Cavanagh, who was an Olympic Torch Bearer in Wirral earlier, will be setting up a stall to raise funds for Help For Heroes.

Public transport is recommended as parking is limited.

Vintage shuttle buses are also available from Harrison Drive and Seacombe Ferry.
