AS THE arrival of the Olympic Flame sparked the biggest celebrations in Birknehead's recent history last night, for the rest of the weekend Wirral is set to be painted red, white and blue as thousands celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
More than 60 street parties are scheduled to take place after Wirral Council waived the usual £150 fees to close roads.
It means the forthcoming celebrations look set to outdo last year’s festivities for the Royal Wedding.
Around 40 streets were closed off on April 29 last year so neighbourhoods could come together to mark the marriage of Prince William to Kate Middleton with many parties continuing into the night.
And now Wirral residents are gearing up for a whole weekend of celebrations as the parties are held from Thursday, May 31, right through to Wednesday, June 6.
