UPDATE: Commuters face rush-hour disruption following gas leak outside Liverpool Central Station UPDATE: Commuters face rush-hour disruption following gas leak outside Liverpool Central Station

RUSH-HOUR commuters face disruption to their journeys following a gas leak outside Central Station in Liverpool this morning.

Emergency workers were called to a report of a suspected gas leak at about 11.30am at the former Lewis's department store on the corner of Renshaw Street and Ranelagh Street.

In order to ensure the safety of the public, roads around the building have been cordoned off while engineers work to resolve the situation.

Central Station has been closed and trains are not currently stopping but they are passing through the station.

The rest of the railway network in Liverpool is still running.

Commuters travelling to Wirral are advised to use James Street, Moorfields or Lime Street stations.

Drivers and pedestrians are advised to avoid this area of the city centre completely as the following main roads are closed:

Ranelagh Street at its junctions with Hanover Street and Renshaw Street;

Lime Street from its junction with St George's Place to Renshaw Street;

Renshaw Street, between Lime Street and Berry Street;

The area where Brownlow Hill and Mount Pleasant meet Copperas Hill between its junctions with London Road and Renshaw Street.
