TRIBUTES have been paid to Wirral teenager Paul Macaulay who died in tragic circumstances after falling from an apartment block.

Paul, from West Kirby, slipped from the roof of the building in Victoria Street, Liverpool, during the early hours of Thursday morning.

The 19-year-old, who had been at a party with friends, was taken to Royal Liverpool University Hospital by ambulance for emergency treatment but died shortly after arrival.

It is believed he had climbed onto the roof with friends who were smoking.

Paul had been due to begin his studies at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridgeshire this week.

His death has deeply shocked family, friends and his former teachers at Hilbre High School.

The school's headteacher Jan Levenson paid tribute today.

She said: “Paul was a wonderful young man.

"Described by his teachers as ‘sensitive, thoughtful and kind’, his fun-loving nature and warm sense of humour endeared Paul to everyone with whom he had dealings.

“Staff who taught him are absolutely devastated at the news of his death.

"Paul had enjoyed great success at both GCSE and A-level and was looking forward to starting life as an undergraduate at university.

"He was a young man with masses of potential and a bright future ahead; we cannot believe his light has been extinguished at such a tender age.

“Our deepest and most sincere condolences go out to his family and friends.”

More than 800 friends have left messages on a Facebook page set up his memory.

One distraught pal wrote: “RIP mate, still in shock. Will be deeply missed and never forgotten xx”

Another said: “You were the most loveable person in the world, I still can't believe this has happened - you didn't deserve to go to rest yet. You still had many, many years of happiness ahead of you.”

School friends of Paul, who was known as ‘Fesh’, came together at a local pub to celebrate his life last night.

Following the gathering, one friend wrote: “Should have seen how many people came to Spoons tonight for you! Would have felt well popular! Made me so sad you weren't there though, I had a good old gossip about all the memories we have :) Miss you.”
