A PENSIONER has died following a two-vehicle smash in Wirral.

Police say the 83-year-old man collapsed while exchanging insurance details with the other driver.

The "low speed collision," which involved a silver Volkswagen Polo car and a Ford Transit pick-up truck, happened at around 11.10am on Cross Lane, Bebington.

The driver of the Polo was taken to Arrowe Park Hospital but was later pronounced dead.

The driver of the Ford van, who is aged 41, was not injured and remained at the scene.

The victim's elderly wife, who was a front seat passenger in the Polo, did not suffer any injuries.

It is the second fatality on the borough’s roads in less than 48 hours.

A 51-year-old man died yesterday morning after he was struck by an ambulance on Fender Lane, Moreton.

Following today's incident, police closed Cross Lane between its junctions with Stanton Road and Heath Road.

The road was re-opened at around 1pm.

A post-mortem examination will be carried out to establish the cause of the man’s death.
