A man has died after being hit by an ambulance early on Sunday morning.

The 51-year-old was struck by the vehicle as it travelled along Fender Lane in Moreton at 5am.

At the time of the collision the ambulance was travelling with its blue lights on, police said.

A spokesman said: "The road was closed for a number of hours and inquiries are ongoing to fully establish the circumstances of the incident."

The dead man is yet to be formally identified and a post-mortem examination will take place to establish the cause of death.

A North West Ambulance Service spokesman said: "The Trust offers its sincere condolences and our thoughts are with the friends and family of the deceased at this sad time.

"This matter is now subject to a police investigation and NWAS will work closely with Merseyside Police as part of this."
