The mood in Birkenhead tonight remains tense in the aftermath of earlier disturbances.

Wirral Globe: Birkenhead Riot

Groups of teenagers stalk the roads around the Charing Cross area and it’s surrounding streets, their parents seemingly paying no heed to the police appeal earlier today to keep them inside.

Nervous onlookers peer from their gates to catch a glimpse of flashing blue lights and despite the late hour, a number of cars cruise by what tomorrow morning will be Birkenhead’s latest tourist attractions.

On Oxton Road, fire crews fill the tank up on their engine after putting out a blaze at the Vale Pub, then head off to the next scene.

Further into town near McDonalds, a lone police car and two officers watch as a pack of men, outnumbering them, walk casually across the junction at Charing Cross, trying to catch a glimpse of the damage on Grange Road.

On Claughton Road, a burnt out car and smashed glass litter the tarmac, again the scene has a number of spectators.
