New weight limits and traffic restrictions have been imposed on the M53 Moreton Spur exit following an inspection of the bridge.
The Highways Agency is warning drivers that a limit of 7.5 tonnes has been introduced on the southbound exit slip road at Junction 2.
The restrictions follow an inspection as part of a national programme of assessments of "half joint bridges."
The restrictions will remain in place while further investigations are carried out.
A diversion is in operation for vehicles over 7.5 tonnes via Junction 3, returning back along the motorway to exit at Junction 2 northbound.
Highways Agency asset manager Dave Clark said: “The restrictions were imposed in the interest of safety while further investigation work is carried out.
"A clearly signed diversion for vehicles over 7.5 tonnes is in operation and should cause minimal delays.”
