Barry Kevin Royal, of Market Street, Birkenhead, will appear before Wirral Magistrates this morning charged with the murder of Peter Caine.

Mr Caine, 27, was found collapsed in Market Street in the early hours of Thursday this week.

He was taken to Arrowe Park Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Police say a post mortem examination concluded cause of death was a stab wound to the chest.

28-year-old Royal also faces a charge of possession of an offensive weapon.

Colleagues of Mr Caine, who was a volunteer worker with Wirral CVS, said he was always a friendly face in the office.

Adam Woodcock, development and funding officer, said: "He always put a smile on the faces of his colleagues.

“He was somebody dedicated to the volunteer role and was in the process of trying to gain his 100-hour volunteer certificate.

“He’d been through a lot of difficult challenges in his life, but had turned things around and was improving his chances.

“He was looking for any job that he could get and was making real efforts to get into the world of work.

“He was a unique character, well-liked by all the staff will be very much missed.”

Mr Caine was originally from Cumbria but had lived in Birkenhead for many years.
