THE ongoing saga of a supermarket development that left a busy road in West Kirby looking like a bombsite could be nearing an end.
Aldi was given planning permission in January of last year to build on land it had purchased in Bridge Road.
The West Kirby site - branded an "eyesore" by local councillors - remains a boulder-strewn wasteland after development work started and then came to a halt because of a dispute with Network Rail over ownership of part of the land.
The lack of progress caused anger and frustration for people living in the village.
But now it appears the company has contacted Wirral's planning spokesman to say that, as soon as its new store is finsished in Moreton, work will start in West Kirby - about two weeks' time.
Among those calling for building to begin is ward councillor Gerry Ellis, who said recently: "I really hope they do because that site has been nothing but an eyesore for the past year.
"Local people have become very annoyed by the lack of progress. It’s disappointing Aldi has not seemed bothered about it.”
Planning committee chairman Cllr David Elderton said: “It’s been an appalling situation and the site is still a total mess.
"I am given to understand the dispute between Aldi and Network Rail has been resolved and there’s no legal impediment preventing the work.
"The latest information I had was that work would start within the next two weeks."
The Globe asked Aldi for a statement or interview but was told no one was available to comment.
