THE 31st Wirral Egg Run takes place today.

Thousands of bikers will converge on New Brighton promenade for the world-famous event, which starts at 11am.

Last year around 10,000 took part, raising more than £26,000 which was split between several local charities.

Organisers are warning that due to health and safety rules, the Clatterbridge Hospital finishing site - the run's traditional destination - may have to be closed this year before all the bikers arrive.

Organiser Graham Clark said: “Contrary to a previous information there will be no official secondary 'landing' site.

“Due to health and safety concerns at Clatterbridge Hospital, we may have to close the site before all the bikes arrive.

"If you are unfortunate enough not to be allowed in, please continue to your normal destination without stopping - as directed by Merseyside Police and our Egg Run officials at the gate.

“You will be able to deliver your donations at New Brighton as well as other sites within Wirral and or make a donation through our Virgin Money Giving website."

A council spokesman said measures have been taken to ensure disruption is kept to a minimum.

Information boards have also been set up at key points along the route. Residents and businesses affected by the closures have also been contacted by organisers.

The run itself starts at 11am from New Brighton and makes its way through Wallasey Village, onto Leasowe Road and through to Moreton Cross before turning right through Moreton and heading through Hoylake, West Kirby, Caldy and Heswall, then turning onto the Chester High Road and heading into Thornton Hough and on to Clatterbridge Hospital.

On its first run in 1980, around 20 riders took part taking Easter Eggs to give to sick children at Arrowe Park Hospital.

The run changed to a charity fundraiser in 1998 and has so far raised around £75,000 for local causes.

This year’s run is sponsored by Wirral-based Camps Solicitors and GEG Motorcycles, with help from other local businesses, Merseyside Police, Wirral Council and Bam Nuttalls traffic management.
