Survey shows parents unhappy with Calday school management

MORE than half of parents at a top Wirral school are unhappy with the way it is run, according to a new report.

Calday Grange Grammar conducted a parent/carer survey and found that 63% did not agree that the school was "well-led and well managed" by governors.

The findings come just months after angry parents rallied to demand the board of governors stand down.

They felt the school was in jeopardy after headteacher Andrew Hall was suspended in October 2009 and governors "failed to keep parents in the loop" about his return.

In December, education watchdog Ofsted stripped Calday Grange of its overall "outstanding" status, highlighting that the school needed to restore confidence in a "significant minority of parents."

The new survey reveals how just 11% of parents who took part are pleased with how governors are operating.

The school, which celebrates its 375th anniversary this year, was released from council control in January 2009 and became a trust school.

Trust chairman Tim Sibthorp said he was disappointed with the results.

He said: "It is a great shame that there is a clear lack of trust between parents and the senior members of the governing body.

"And I hope that the situation can be rectified as soon as possible."

However the report also showed that the majority of parents were pleased with some other aspects with 92% agreeing that the school was a safe place for their children to work.

And 75% of those quizzed said they would recommend the school to others.

Acting headteacher Micheal Twist said: "We have been delighted with the size of the parental response to this survey, and our thanks go to all parents who contributed.

"We feel that we have a detailed analysis of parent perception that can be used in developing the school further. "In publishing the results, we are showing strength and we are being open and honest.

"The survey identifies some clear priorities, and we will be sharing our plans for development and progress through the parent newsletter."

What would solve the situation is to sack the Headmaster once and for all, and Mrs Twemlow resign with immediate effect.

That way the proper legal procedure would be allowed to take place, in open no secrets, and no behind closed doors manipulation.

If the Board Members had any gumption and real concern for the school, they would call for this to happen ASAP.

That probably means they would have to develop some backbone, and behave like human beings for a change.

The real change we need to see is the same powers Twemlow used to try sack the Head used on her. If it was so easy for the nasty vindictive self-important monster to try get rid of him, why not her too?

The real people who are damaging this school know who they are and should have been kicked out long ago.

Hugo2008-'Sack the headmaster once and for all'. I wasn't aware that he had done anything wrong. Please explain, or is it another one of your scatter gun approaches to every problem? Lady Dante will be turning in her grave over all this. About 20 years ago my mother became involved in the Save Our Schools campaign, an organisation set up by parents in Deeside and Bebington to thwart the attempts by Lib/Lab councillors, then running the council, to get rid of the Grammar Schools and impose the Comprehensive System on the area. It was a hard battle that was only eventually resolved in favour of the parents by the then Education Secretary Kenneth Baker. One thing Lady Dante did say was that there were a couple of people involved with S.O.S who she thought were in the whole thing for their own self aggrandizement, and could possibly cause trouble. One is still associated with the school. Guess who?

Margaret Twemlow should stick to making a tit of herself on Come Dine With Me.

Dante:

Sorry for the delay in answering, I do not believe I have a scatter gun approach, however I am positive.
I would like to see the whole episode brought to a head, the damage being inflicted on this wonderful school, will be felt for years to come.
If i had my way I would dismiss the whole board of governors and if required the unfortunate headmaster.

And then let the due legal procedure take its place, this would have little or no bad effect on the present pupil population, who after all are the most important people involved.
Not the Governors, not the Head and certainly not Mrs Twemlow who should be the first to go.

Just for the record I to was heavily involved in "Save our Schools" and in particular the grammar school system.
Respect to "Lady Dante"
