Wirral woman walks her wheelie to the tip after council bin collection failure

A FRUSTRATED Wirral resident turned bin-man for the day after her street became clogged with a month's worth of waste.

Justine Robinson walked her wheelie bin to Bidston Waste Recycling Centre on Friday to show Wirral Council she will not wait any longer for her bins to be emptied.

The 36-year-old, who lives at Princes Way, Wallasey, said her road and others in the area have been "missed out" in the recent catch-up of collections following icy weather.

But after reporting the problem to the council, she was told that Biffa had recorded the street as being cleared.

Ms Robinson, who suffers from a series of medical problems, decided to take matters into her own hands and make the half-hour journey on foot to get rid of her rubbish.

She said: "I decided to walk the bin myself because I got fed up with all the waste mounting up and no-one willing to do anything about it.

"I understand that a lot of collections had to be cancelled but that is not the issue here.

"I am annoyed that Biffa told the council that our road had been dealt with and collections were up to date.

"This means we are not due to have our rubbish taken until December 17. By then, there is going to be a month's worth just sitting there - it's ridiculous.

"I couldn't leave mine any longer, there was food waste rotting and it's not like I could put the meat products into my compost heap because it would be sure to attract rats."

Also angered by the delay in collections is Wallasey Village resident John Burke of Breckside Avenue.

Mr Burke said: "The council needs to sort something out because before long we are going to have cats, dogs and mice ripping bin-sacks open."

A Wirral Council spokesman said: "We are aware of this complaint and have investigated it and responded.

"We appreciate this resident's frustration, but a lot of people are in the same position at the moment, and crews are working hard to catch up with bins that have been missed in recent bad weather conditions.

"We are happy for people to bag any extra waste accrued and leave it out for collection next to the green bin on the appropriate day."

The spokesman added that anyone facing problems with refuse collection should telephone Streetscene on 606 2004.

I have had problems before where Biffa have told StreetScene things hat are not true.

And then i had to wait 3 weeks for a bin collection.

StreetScene need to tuffin up on them, there such a joke nower days they expect everything even what side of the bin is pointing the road side, whats all that about when our taxes pay for this service.
And they tell us all the does and donts but the Biffa team cannot even put a bin back where they found it.

".....crews are working hard to catch up with bins that have been missed in recent bad weather conditions."
More lies from the council.
From the Wirral website:
The outstanding bins are being left until their next collection, four weeks worth of rubbish!

Unless you are on a main road the roads look lilke a third world country. In Upton we have not had rubbish collected for one month!! The roads have been clear of ice for some considerable time now but the same old excuses from the unhelpful staff at streetscene who suggested to me when I rang that I could grit my own street it a yellow bin was near by. Would that bring the bin wagon..... er no!! Apparently staff are out checking it roads are safe and the bin wagons are working tirelessly ,.... even on a Satruday!!! Yes, like the rest of us who have to pay for this appalling service, lots of us work weekends. Well one month since the last rubbish collection and bins still littering my pavement causing obstructions to pedestrians and no wagon is site! Is this the face of things to come all winter!! How about we all take our rubbish and leave it on the council office steps, would this make them take action???

It looks like we are to have bad weather for many winters to come, And far be it for me to expect the refuse men to have to walk on the same snow/ice covered pavements as the rest of us mugs so I would like to offer an idea For THE BIN WAGONS TO HAVE SNOW TYRES AND THE REFUSE MEN TO HAVE ICE SHOE GRIPS.
