A FRUSTRATED Wirral resident turned bin-man for the day after her street became clogged with a month's worth of waste.

Justine Robinson walked her wheelie bin to Bidston Waste Recycling Centre on Friday to show Wirral Council she will not wait any longer for her bins to be emptied.

The 36-year-old, who lives at Princes Way, Wallasey, said her road and others in the area have been "missed out" in the recent catch-up of collections following icy weather.

But after reporting the problem to the council, she was told that Biffa had recorded the street as being cleared.

Ms Robinson, who suffers from a series of medical problems, decided to take matters into her own hands and make the half-hour journey on foot to get rid of her rubbish.

She said: "I decided to walk the bin myself because I got fed up with all the waste mounting up and no-one willing to do anything about it.

"I understand that a lot of collections had to be cancelled but that is not the issue here.

"I am annoyed that Biffa told the council that our road had been dealt with and collections were up to date.

"This means we are not due to have our rubbish taken until December 17. By then, there is going to be a month's worth just sitting there - it's ridiculous.

"I couldn't leave mine any longer, there was food waste rotting and it's not like I could put the meat products into my compost heap because it would be sure to attract rats."

Also angered by the delay in collections is Wallasey Village resident John Burke of Breckside Avenue.

Mr Burke said: "The council needs to sort something out because before long we are going to have cats, dogs and mice ripping bin-sacks open."

A Wirral Council spokesman said: "We are aware of this complaint and have investigated it and responded.

"We appreciate this resident's frustration, but a lot of people are in the same position at the moment, and crews are working hard to catch up with bins that have been missed in recent bad weather conditions.

"We are happy for people to bag any extra waste accrued and leave it out for collection next to the green bin on the appropriate day."

The spokesman added that anyone facing problems with refuse collection should telephone Streetscene on 606 2004.
