FORMER football star Shaun Garnett has heaped praise on NHS workers for their hard work and commitment.

The former Tranmere Rovers player was at the NHS Wirral's annual general meeting, in Port Sunlight, to present awards to volunteers and staff.

The event, which was attended by around 180 people, was a chance to pay tribute to GPs, dentists, opticians and other employees across Wirral.

Shaun, who is now head of youth and centre of excellence at Tranmere Rovers FC, said: "I - and my family - have lived in Wirral all our lives and have always found the NHS to be brilliant in every way. It is a testament to the staff for their hard work, dedication and commitment – and long hours they work which has made NHS Wirral such a success.”

Taking home the award for Volunteer of the Year was Peter Spindler, trustee for Wirral Pathfinders.

He was given the prestigious title for his work helping people with mental health problems by offering guidance and support.

Peter said: “This is tremendous – I was so overwhelmed. When my name was announced I nearly fell through the floor! This is unbelievable.”

Other awards handed out at the event included Independent Contractor and Employee of the Year, Lifetime Achievement Award, Employee of the Year, Team of the Year as well as Long Service to the NHS (more than 25 years).
