Wirral's St John Plessington college wins top national title

A WIRRAL school has been given the prestigious title of Outstanding Secondary School of the Year.

St John Plessington Catholic College picked up the award at the Times Educational Supplement National Awards on Thursday night.

The Bebington-based school fought off competition from every secondary school in the country until it was whittled down to a shortlist of six.

Deputy headteacher Brian Lally said the accolade is a testament to the hard work and effort put in by staff and pupils.

He said: "For us, winning the award doesn't change how we run the school. Everything is carrying on as normal but now we have been recognised for all the hard work we put in day in, day out.

"It is a massive achievement for us to gain such a prestigious title. We hope to break our own record for exam results in the summer and continue to go from strength to strength.

The school were nominated for the same award last year as well as a mention in the Eco-friendly School of the Year category, but narrowly missed out.

But thanks to their work with struggling schools throughout the North West and a notable improvement, they managed to bag the title this year.

Mr Lally added: "The award comes at the end of another fantastic year which has seen ground-breaking innovations for the college, not least of which takes place next month when 12 pupils will travel to China for an intensive two-week language and culture immersion experience.

"The pupils involved are currently undertaking introductory language tuition and enrichment activities in preparation for what is sure to be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."

Speaking at the awards ceremony, which was held in London, headteacher Tom Quinn said: "I am proud to accept this award on behalf of the whole college community whose ongoing efforts continue to make St John's such a huge success. Well done, everyone."
