A STRONG contingent of young runners from Wirral Athletic Club took part in the second of the 1998 Cheshire League Cross Country meetings at Sherdley Park, St Helens.

Sarah Dower, who finished 17th, led home the Wirral athletes in the Under-11 girls' race. She was followed by Vickie Garrad (24th), Nicola Hird (29th), Nicola Allison (32nd), Robin Tinsley (36th), Alex Bruce (39th) and Francesca Bell (50th).

For the Under-11 boys, Stuart Hardman finished in third place, with Peter Smith 15th, Stephen Mall 21st and Jack Bell 24th.

Both the Under-13 and Under-15 girls are hoping to build on good team results achieved in the first meeting and should maintain their standing.

In the Under-13 girls, Gemma Evans was first home for Wirral in fifth place, with Nicki Smith 14th, Louise Bates 17th, Rebecca Davis 22nd, Lindsey Quick 23rd and Debbie Old 42nd.

In the Under-15 girls' race, Lindsey Doyle came fifth, followed by Vicki Rooney and Rachel Broadhurst (18th and 19th, respectively), Sarah McDonnell (23rd) and Ruth Barber (31st).

The third league meeting is at Leek, Staffordshire, this month.
