DETECTIVES in Wirral are investigating after a man received serious facial injuries when he was stabbed in a "targeted attack" on Monday evening.

Officers were called to the ASDA supermarket at Woodchurch at around 7.30pm to reports of a stabbing.

The man, believed to be in his 30s, was treated by the ambulance service for wounds thought to have been caused by a knife.

He was taken to hospital where his condition is described as "serious but stable."

Detectives are investigating the circumstances, and understand that the man did not receive the injuries while in thesupermarket.

At this early stage, the motive for the attack is unclear, but detectives believe it to be "targeted."

Patrols have been stepped up in the area.
