SNOW: Offenders on Community Payback clear ice from Wirral's Conway Park Station

Offenders on Community Payback have been assisting Wirral Council and members of the public by gritting and clearing ice and snow outside Conway Park Station.

Five people including an elderly man had already fallen there as a result of the icy conditions and the area had been deemed a priority site by the local authority.

Now, thanks to the work of the offenders and their supervisor, the area is clear.

Operations manager for Community Payback, Gary O’Keefe offered the clean up service to the council yesterday, and teams of offenders have also been clearing the areas around Hamilton Square Station and pavements on Europa Boulevard.

Steve Maddox, chief executive at Wirral Council said: “My thanks to everyone undertaking this work - it is very much appreciated.”

Sue Brown, assistant chief officer at Merseyside Probation Trust said: “This is a great example of what Community Payback and partnership work is all about, and the appreciation of the public is very evident.”

Elsewhere on Merseyside offenders are helping to reduce the risk to the elderly and vulnerable by removing ice and snow in high priority areas, working in partnership with council staff.

Merseyside Probation Trust has around 90 Community Payback projects running at any one time across Merseyside, helping save communities over £1m annually in unpaid labour.

The initiative is part of the Justice Seen, Justice Done campaign, which aims to make the work of offenders more visible to local communities.

This was launched in Spring of 2009 by Louise Casey, the Government’s Advisor on Crime and Justice, and entails offenders on Community Payback wearing hi-visibility orange vests and working in partnership with local authorities.

Well done to all, especially the people on payback, I hope you felt a sense of achiement in what you did and not just feel you were being punished.

We should turf out all the people in comfy prison sells with central heating to clear the snow and ice.

Community Payback Schemes are the best thing since sliced bread, and should be expanded using any able bodied person at present receiving benefits.
Many young people do not understand the principle of Give and Take for the improvement within the community.
Well done to all concerned

careful hugo, that might mean you sometime the way things are. Would you like to automatically become a slave to others because they had a job and you didn't?

By the same token taxpayers are slaves to those who do not have a job, because they do.

We are all connected in one way or another and as far as the story above goes I am glad to see something positive coming out of something negative.

I like balance.

Instead of forcing somebody on benefits to clear the roads and pavements it would be a better idea if they could volunteer to do it and then they could add this to any CV for prospective employers.
This would be better than forced labour which would probably not be very helpful.

But Jayo, how many would volunteer to do it without a financial incentive ? If it were that simple then I think the pavement would already be cleared by those able to do so.
...
Good idea in principle but with so few jobs around I don't think it would make much difference to any prospective employer - at least in the short-term.

I honestly dont think any of us would appreciate having to clean someones caravan or toilet because they got paid more than we did.

I think more people than you think would volunteer. Obviously the long term useless wouldn't go near it but someone newly redundant would.
Agreed the me culture would want recompense but not everyone is greedy and selfish.
So we must agree to differ.

Many firms are using the downturn as an excuse to shed employee's. The taxes that go with employing are extremely restrictive.
Tesco make an absolute fortune and have been cost cutting for months.
