Council leader welcomes Wirral landfill sites decision

The final version of a long-awaited report into waste disposal for the county has ruled there will be no new landfill sites for Wirral.

The “Merseyside and Halton joint waste Development Plan Document” has been through many consultation processes and will be going to all local authorities for endorsement over the coming weeks.

Councillor Steve Foulkes, leader of Wirral Council and City Region cabinet member responsible for environment and waste, said he had “made Wirral’s position very clear to the officers negotiating on the council’s behalf on the Waste Development Plan”.

He added: “While it is important that a strategic approach is taken to the pressing issue of dealing with Merseyside’s waste, I have always been clear in my resolve that I will not accept solutions that are not right for local people.

“I am therefore pleased that it has been confirmed that no new landfill sites will be located in Wirral.

“Neither Prenton nor Moreton have been identified as sites in the final version of the development plan.

“This report is a result of sensible and robust negotiations conducted at the highest level.”

Existing clusters of waste uses in and around the industrial areas of Birkenhead Docks and Tranmere have been identified for waste re-processors, which process glass, metals, plastics, paper, fibreboard and wood.

Two sites with existing consents at Wallasey Bridge Road are included in the plan as district sites. A site for household waste site adjacent to Sainsbury’s in Upton will also not now be identified in the plan.

The review will be considered by Wirral’s cabinet on February 4 and by the full council on February 15.

There is a mountain of Hot Air and rubbish created at every council meeting. Most of the time created by a very small number of councillors, with all the rest voting just as the Party Political Whips direct them too.
Lets get Party Politics out of Local Government, after all who need 66 Councillors when about 20 would be more than enough

Hay all the NIMBYS (NOT IN MY BACK YARD) have won and our waste will now be taken to some other unspoilt beauty spot for dumping.

Wait a minute as I recall the Dutch have reclaimed land from the sea using dikes and in Hong Kong they made an island to build their airport. I say that we the people of Wirral do the same all we need is a plot of land on the coast like Moreton that has no real use as a holiday destination or even as a new housing development and we use this as a point to start our new land fill.

Yes the people of Wirral could have a larger borough as we expand into the sea using waste products as a foundation for new parks and you would see new jobs as this scheme grows and becomes the new template for success.

Or our councillors can just dump our rubbish in one of the other councils tips filling up near some one else’s town.

"City Region cabinet member".... I reckon Cllr Foulkes loves cosying up to the big city, which on its own, and before even considering his other shortcomings, makes him the wrong man to lead Wirral Council!
