WIRRAL South Labour Party have selected their prospective parliamentary candidate.

Bromborough-born Alison McGovern was chosen on Saturday afternoon as the person to fight for the seat to be made vacant by Ben Chapman.

Alison grew up in the constituency and lived in Bromborough for 18 years.

She is currently public affairs manager for the charity Creativity Culture and Education, leading on policies for family support and advancing the cultural and creative sector.

Alison is also currently a Labour councillor for Brunswick Park, in the London borough of Southwark, where she is the Labour Group's deputy leader.

She said: "It’s a great privilege to have been selected by the members of Wirral South and I can’t wait to get out and hear what issues matter to people on the doorstep.

"Wirral is doing well and has an exciting future.

"The Government has set clear choices for the future that protect Wirral schools, the NHS and the police.

"Labour has also taken action to support the economy, helping businesses and families through the downturn.

"But there’s no room for complacency. The Tories, just like in the past, want to ignore the North West and expect people to accept an age of austerity and low growth.

"They represent change many people simply cannot afford.

"I will be fighting for a better future for all in Wirral."

Frank McCoy, chairman of Wirral South Labour Party, said: "We’ve had excellent candidates all with links to Wirral in the past.

"Alison McGovern will stand up and fight for this constituency and we're delighted with our choice.

"I’m proud that Labour has held this seat since 1997 and in Alison we have someone who grew up in Wirral South and understands what a difference having a Labour MP has made in this area.

"I’m confident that whenever the election comes Labour now has the best candidate for Wirral South.

"Only a Labour Government will continue to make a real difference for the Wirral protecting essential front line services.

"The NHS, schools and the police are Labour’s top priorities."
