After 33 years, the Wirral Show is scrapped After 33 years, the Wirral Show is scrapped

THE Wirral Show has been axed after its organisers, the Rotary Club of Wallasey and Wallasey Lions Club, pulled out.

In a statement, the organisers said: "The Rotary Club of Wallasey and Wallasey Lions Club have determined that they will not be continuing to organise the annual Wirral Show.

"Volunteers from Lions and Rotary, together with Wallasey Round Table, which ceased to operate in May this year, have run the Wirral Show for many years, for much of the time with support from Wirral Metropolitan Borough Council.

"Over the past 33 years the event has grown to become one of the UK’s biggest free-to-enter summer attractions, drawing thousands of visitors each year to the New Brighton promenade showground."

Michael Emberton, chairman of the Wirral Show, said: "Given the way the show has grown over the years we have now reached a point where the complexities of such a huge operation are beyond what a group of committed volunteers reasonably may be expected to accomplish."

At a meeting of the Wirral Show Committee, resolutions submitted by the Lions and Rotary clubs were considered resulting in the decision that – with great regret – both clubs are unable to plan and organise the Show in 2010 or in future years.

The committee’s decision was conveyed to Steve Maddox, Chief Executive of Wirral Council, in a letter from Michael Emberton, chairman of the show committee.

The committee expressed thanks for the council’s continued support, over the years, for the Wirral Show.

The show started in 1977 as a community project of the Rotary Club of Wallasey who decided to mark the Queen’s Silver Jubilee by reviving the Wallasey Carnival with a procession of decorated floats through the town.

The parade finished on New Brighton promenade where a number of stalls had been erected.

In the following years, the number of floats decreased while the number of stalls increased, becoming the main attraction.

Entertainment was introduced to add to the occasion.

As the event became too large for Rotary alone to organise, the Lions and Round Table clubs were invited to help in what became a unique venture uniting three service organisations working together on one project for the benefit of the community.

As the show became a two-day event, it attracted very large crowds from Wirral, Merseyside, the North West and North Wales to enjoy spectacular entertainment, all provided with no charge for entry to the showground.

Highlights have included the Musical Ride of the Household Cavalry, the White Helmets Motorcycle Display team, The Royal Horse Artillery, many famous stunt acts such as the Garard Naprous horsemen and the Lings Motocross team and a huge variety of aircraft displays ranging from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight to the gentle giant of the skies, the A380 Airbus and the Red Arrows.

Over time the showground has extended to cover the entire area of open land, known as The Dips, between New Brighton and Harrison Drive.

A Wirral Council spokesman said: "It was with great sadness that we learned of the committee’s decision.

"We would like to pay tribute to the hard work and dedication of all those volunteers involved over many years. It is simply not possible, at a time of significant financial constraints, for the council to take over the running and funding of the show.

"We will continue to work hard alongside all those people organising events in the area to ensure that Wirral continues to have a successful programme of events for both residents and visitors."

The Wirral Show used to be a great day out but sadly it has declined over the years. We were left with very little apart from burger stalls and an overpriced fair. It was surpassed by the excellent Wirral Food & Drink Festival which has the kind of things that people now want, ie local produce and Farmer's Market goodies.

To be honest it was very expensive and bums used to go there with pitbull terriers, kids in prams and cans of lagers looking for trouble. Nah not to my liking.

Whilst the show had become very expensive & a place for gangs of drunken louts, it is a great shame that such an iconic event is to be lost. I would like to thank The Rotary club, the Lions, Round Table & the council for the hard work over the years in providing Wirral & the north west with the UK's largest free to enter outdoor event. It had been a great day of enjoyment for us all at some point over the past 33 years. A massive blow for New Brighton & Wirral, & such a shame that this iconic event has come to an end.

Piggy I suspect an awful lot of red tape slowly wound tighter and tighter and finally strangled the event. I also suspect it was done quite deliberately. I predict there will be a Politically Correct event lined up to take its place. Time will tell.

I suspect you are right Spiffy, together with maybe outside, interfering influences but what a good idea from Merseymouth. Look at the success of Deeside . I have taken hundreds of people to Deeside over the years and the place is always heaving but alas shortsightedness and incompetence has been the downfall of Wirral now for many years and until we get a new regime changes for the better are unlikely......so sad

OOooohh great idea yes Merseymouth. If I can't have another open air swimming pool (my absolute hearts desire) then I want an ice rink.

That is a superb idea Merseymouth, But why cant we have an outdoor swimming pool as well after all we do have the room and a forward thinking council should have the inclination.

I wonder what the real reason is for stopping the Wirral show after all these years ? It seems to be very strange to completely cancel such a money spinning event like this.

I think this is a ideal opportunity for Wirral to consider the possibilities of hosting an enormous Gay Pride event on behalf of the whole of Merseyside.
..
I'm sure the Household Cavalry and the White Helmets etc would all be welcome and willing.

The Rotary,Lions and round table are business men and captains of industry. Are they truly admitting that they can't organise a summer fete?

Have you lot gone stark raving bonkers.....an outdoor swimming pool,
or is it just me being a whimp in my old age?

Maybe we could pipe the hot air from Wallasey Town Hall to an open air lido, in the summer months.
The freeze the water over the winter period then we could all have what we want.
Then a dirt track round the outside for speedway or stock car racing, cracked it, see joined up thinking, works every time.

Hey Hugo, Speedway....have you ever been. I used to go regular when I lived in East Anglia and would love to see it round this area. Tremendous entertainment and the smell of that burning Castrol R ....... heaven!
I`m afraid your joined up thinking is way beyond the the intelligence of the clowns in Wallasey Clown Hall.

I agree it was expensive but it was a fun day out that everyone could enjoy if they wanted to or could afford to. Even just walking around the place perhaps seeing people you haven't seen in a while due to life getting in the way (as it does) was nice. A gathering for ALL of the community without a Politically Correct Agenda. For that it will be missed.

The last time I bothered to go was, I think, 2001. It did basically become just a fairground didn't it? Just an excuse for a few people to profit from rides and junk food? I dont see what's so good about that.
..
Wicked sheep is right that the food and drink festival is more the kind of thing we need. Anything which has a proper focus and is not just a money grabbing free for all full of hoodrats and scum.
