Conservatives win Moreton by-election

THE Conservatives have retained their hold in Moreton West & Saughall Massie following yesterday's by-election.

Tory candidate Steve Williams, a former policeman, took 2255 of the votes in the by-election, which followed the sudden death of ward councillor Suzanne Moseley in September.

Also standing were Labour's Andrew Hollingworth, who picked up 615 votes, the Liberal Democrats' Steve Pitt with 134 votes, Independent candidate Alec McFadden with 121 votes and the Green Party's Jim McGinley with 92 votes.

Steve Williams, 52, lives in Saughall Massie and runs his own computer business.

He told the Globe: "I'm very happy to have been given the chance to represent my ward. From last night's result, it is clear that people are ready for change.

"I've always been a Conservative supporter, but could never get involved in politics during the 24 years I was in the police.

"I'm a local resident, have lived here all my life and my children were educated here. I share my fellow constituents' concerns on issues like speeding and dog muck.

"I feel honoured to have been elected and hope to carry on where Suzanne left off."

Fellow Moreton West Conservative councillor Chris Blakeley said: "It was a massive result for us - 70.1 per cent voted for us, with 19 per cent for Labour.

"The scale of the result sends out a strong message, across the borough, about what will happen in May."

Alec McFadden, who now plans to stand as a parliamentary candidate against Salford Labour MP Hazel Blears, said: "I'd be the first to congratulate the Conservatives. The only reason they did so well, was because they didn't support the library closures."

Alec McFadden is right about the library closures.
..
What is Steve Williams talking about? One Toty has been replaced by another. How does that indicate people are redy for a change? Looks like you've elected yourselves a good'un!

Hi Slumdog. Yep we did oppose Library closures but don't believe that is the only reason we won and won some convincingly, there is a lot more to it than one single issue. And yes we held the seat, however we received a 10% increase in our vote with the other parties having theirs reduced. That sends the message that voters are switching to us. Replicate that across the Borough and change wil happen, however we will have to wait for May next year to see if that happens. Oh, and you are right again Steve is a good'un......

Justice done, a conservative candidate elected to replace an elected conservative councillor whos untimely, sad death forced a bye-election.
However I do believe that an alternative independent candidate would have pulled in better results than comrade McFadden and would have certainly wiped out the 10% tory increase. So not necessarily the sweeping victory you claim Chris but we will have to see. At least Foulkes and Holbrook were shown the way to go home

Chris, did you mean a 10% increase in your vote or a 10% increase in your share of the vote. I believe only 28% of the electorate turned out. How do you think you would do if people bothered to vote?
..
Piggy, I thought all that mattered to you and the rest of the Sons of Mary Whitehouse was that a candidate should be independent. Do you really mean independent and just to the right of an Oyster Fork?
..
I think you may have just blown a rather ragged and smoking hole in your pretence of party impartiality Piggy... Ooops!

Congratulations to the winning candidate in Moreton, I do hope he repays the ectorate by listening to the voters, and works for and on behalf of them, as I am sure his intentions are.
Too many Councillors have lost touch with the rank and file by just blindly following the party political whip. I firmly believe that Party Political Dogma has no part in local government. I am dissapointed in the low turnout, perhaps apathy rules in this part of the Wirral, what a shame.

VERY POOR result for the liberals - maybe they'll get the message about siding with Foulkes on his power trip.
Well done LibLab - we now have the confirmation that you have made the Tories look good by your own sheer ineptitude... I despair....

Spot on comments from "minimad69" the sheer stupidity of the LIB/LAB pact will allow the tories a complete walk over. That alone is not and never will be good for any Parliament or Local Council under any circumstances. We must have a complete and absolute change from the present system if what we think of as democracy has any chance to survive.
