Wirral rail commuters stranded after rats chew through high-voltage cables

RAIL commuters travelling from West Kirby to Birkenhead have been left stranded this morning after rats chewed through two high-voltage cables.

The damaged 650 volt cables were found on a stretch of track close to Leasowe Station shortly before 6am.

As a result, there has been no power to Bidston signal box or the CCTV cameras at Hoylake and Meols.

Hundreds of commuters have been left stranded, having to find other means of getting to work.

Network Rail engineers are currently carrying out repairs. It is hoped the service will return to normal later this morning.

A Network Rail spokesman said: "Rodent damage is a common problem, but there's nothing we can do to stop it from happening.

"We apologise to commuters for the disruption to their journey and hope the service will be back to normal later this morning."
