AN ELDERLY woman had to be cut free from her car after it was involved in a two-vehicle collision in Meols this afternoon.

Police and rescuers were called to the scene in Birkenhead Road at at around 3.15pm today.

A Mersey Fire and Rescue spokeswoman said the woman, who was in her 70s, had been successfully extricated from the wreckage.

She was treated for shock at the scene by paramedics and later taken to Arrowe Park Hospital as a precaution.

The incident caused severe delays on the A553 Birkenhead Road, the main through-route between West Kirby and Hoylake to Moreton.

There was slow traffic and the road was closed both ways between Dovepoint Road and Fornalls Green Lane.

The fire service had two appliances at the scene, the spokeswoman said.

A Globe reader said there were several police cars in attendance and that the traffic situation was "chaos".

A Merseyside Police spokeswoman said two cars were involved, a blue Ford Fiesta and a green Volkswagen Polo.

Officers were expected to recover the vehicles, which were partially blocking the bridge over Meols railway station, at around 4.30pm.
