Two Wirral single-sex schools could merge into one

Two Wirral single-sex school could merge into one Two Wirral single-sex school could merge into one

PLANS to merge two single-sex Wirral schools will be discussed by Wirral Council's cabinet this week.

Falling numbers of pupils may mean that Pensby High School for Girls and Pensby High School for Boys could become one.

The proposal is part of the council's review of secondary school places across the borough, and will also look at schools in Wallasey and West Kirby.

Despite decling pupil numbers affecting West Wirral as a whole, the problem is mainly "localised to the Pensby area," according to a report to be presented to Thursday evening's meeting.

At the moment, there are 14,22 pupils between both the boys' and the girls' schools, with 328 unfilled places overall; a figure which is expected to rise to 587 by 2016.

The two schools are already located on the same site and share a sixth-form, allowing A-level students to have access to a wider range of resources.

A Wiral Council spokeswoman said: "The review would enable the council to be well-placed to make best use of funding streams by developing a strategic vision for the future of secondary school provisionl.

"Both Pensby Boys’ and Girls’ Schools will continue to work collaboratively with the Local Education Authority to ensure the security of school places in the area."

would be a disaster to join schools its the one of the reasons so many parents choose these schools as it stops the whole boy /girl showing off stuff in classrooms trying to impress one another and hinders learning encourages bullying what a mistake to even consider joining them worried mum of 4

I was a 3rd year at henry meols(all boys) when they decided to merge with oxley(all girls). I have to say i looked forward to the merger but after a while the only result was that my work suffered from far too much distraction - which is what would happen anywhere in these situations. I have to say there was no increase in bullying - it just stayed at the same level for the same reasons. As a teenager it was a much better place to be, but for parents it will definitely make your child's schoolwork suffer. I was a real high-flyer until we joined up! I wouldn't worry about it too much if i were you - thay can always do open yooniversity when they leave skool with no kwalificayshuns! It dident do me any arm.
