West Kirby Grammar School picked up a top art award for their commitment to, and excellence in, arts education on Monday.

They received an Artsmark Silver, the second highest accolade presented by Arts Council England, at a ceremony held at Runcorn’s Brindley Arts Centre.

Students at West Kirby Grammar School have been working with local textile artist Jennifer Collier and have contributed to the Liverpool Biennial Exhibition.

Glenice Robinson, head teacher of West Kirby Grammar School collected the award on behalf of the school.

“I’m delighted that the Arts Council has recognised West Kirby’s dynamic arts education programme,” she said. “Our students have really enjoyed working with a professional artist and I’d like to thank all our staff for their hard work in achieving this award.”

Alan Davey, Chief Executive, Arts Council England, said: “The award recognises West Kirby Grammar School’s passion for the arts and belief in the power of creativity. Arts Council England is committed to great art for everyone and we believe that the earlier children are creatively inspired, the more likely they are to have a lifelong engagement with art.”

A school must dedicate a minimum of 10 per cent of its curricular teaching time to the arts to receive an Artsmark; 13 per cent wins a Silver Artsmark and 15 per cent qualifies or Artsmark Gold. An Artsmark school also provides teachers’ professional development and involvement with local artists and arts groups.
