GLOBE ONLINE EXCLUSIVE: Wirral Council suspends elected member Harry Smith for using foul language

LABOUR Councillor Harry Smith is to be suspended from the council for using foul language in the chamber, a panel has ruled today.

Cllr Smith, one of three members representing the Bidston and St James ward in Birkenhead, will serve a five-day suspension from the council between August 10 and 14.

The standards panel, which investigates allegations of misconduct by councillors, today decided on the penalty after investigating the evidence.

He has also been ordered to write a letter of unconditional apology to all the other 65 councillors.

The standards panel is made up of a representative from each of the Labour, Conservative and Liberal Democrat groups and chaired by an independent.

Cllr Smith made his four-letter tirade during a meeting of the full council on May 20 last year.

The Globe knows the remark he made but has decided against publication.

Two days later on May 22, at a resumed meeting of the council, Cllr Smith apologised to the chamber for having sworn - but insisted it was a response to Conservative members swearing at him.

It's understood that explanation was not accepted, however.

A council spokewoman this afternoon confirmed that Cllr Smith will be suspended between August 10 and 14.

He has three weeks to appeal against the decision.

Whilst I cannot disagree with the panel decision, it is unfortunate that bad language creeps into almost everyday conversation, one only has to listen to any group of people especially when the discussion involves telling the truth. Again lying and evasive answers are stock in trade among most political gatherings. What we need is total truth and complete transparency in all political dealings. That way public behavior BOTH IN AND OUT OF COUNCIL WOULD BE PERFECT.

Children children children.

'He swore first' oh, so that makes it alright them ?.

Indicative of the like-minded yobs that Foulkes surrounds himself with.

We need quality councillors not loud lapdogs yapping and barking but with no actual bite or idea of what they are supposed to be doing

This man treats people as if he has just wiped them off his shoe. He has the skin of a rhino and doesnt care who he upsets! he is nothing more than a nasty piece of work who thinks he can treat people the way he wants and guess what a 5 day suspension - he has just got away with it again! I would like to see if he actually does make a public apology to those concerned as I am not convinced he will? This man should be thrown off of the Council as the Bidston Ward deserve some-one who has respect and integretity to represent them and not some vile little man who clearly doesnt treat his role as a Councillor seriously!!!!
