Man behind New Brighton revamp is appointed chairman of regional development agency

A new chairman of the North West Regional Development Agency has been announced today by business secretary Lord Mandelson.

On a salary of £81,718 for a time commitment of three days per week, Robert Hough will begin his new role on August 17.

I am confident that Robert’s significant experience in business will enable him to help lead the region into the upturn.

Mr Hough, who was born in Urmston, was chairman of the Manchester Ship Canal Company from 1987 to 2002 and is deputy chairman of Peel Holdings, the development company behind the New Brighton revamp and Manchester's Trafford Centre.

He has also been chairman of Liverpool Airport since 1997 and is currently deputy chairman of the NWDA, acting as lead board member for Lancashire.

Lord Mandelson said: "I am delighted to appoint Robert Hough as the new chair of the North West Regional Development Agency.

"I am confident that Robert’s significant experience in business will enable him to help lead the region into the upturn."

The appointment will initially be until December 2012.

Lord Mandelson praised the contribution of out going NWDA chairman, Bryan Gray: "Throughout Bryan’s tenure, he has shown great commitment in championing the North West as a place where businesses can thrive and prosper and he has worked hard to ensure that it remains so during this period of economic uncertainty."

Mr Gray said: "I am delighted that Robert has been appointed to lead the NWDA. Robert has made an important contribution to the NWDA board already and is a strong advocate for the North West."
