Wirral libraries' Quest for a long, hot summer of reading

Wirral Library service is once again issuing a rallying call to youngsters to get involved its annual "Summer Reading Challenge".

The title of this year’s challenge is "Quest Seekers" and the aim is to encourage children to read more during the long summer holiday.

Quest Seekers is based around a fantasy theme of dragons, perilous journeys and daring deeds and books and activities in libraries throughout the summer will reflect that theme.

More than 200 activities and events are to be held in libraries during the summer aimed at getting children to use their imaginations, improve reading skills and most of all to have fun whilst reading towards a gold medal.

Wallasey’s John Hughes – children's poet, comedian and storyteller – got the challenge off to a roaring start by entertaining pupils from Brackenwood and St. Andrews Junior Schools on Wednesday.

John entertained children with stories of dragons, wild raps and word wizardry inspiring them to take part in this year’s challenge.

Last year 7,164 children took part in the game with more than half that number reading six books or more over the course of the summer holiday. And a staggering 106,000 children's books were read over the summer months - this has to be good for improving literacy levels.
