A TRAFFIC survey is currently being carried out on roads across Wirral to monitor speed limits.

The Moreton to Birkenhead flyover is one of 170 locations that have been fitted with counting loops as part of an operation by Wirral council and police.

The device measures the volume of traffic using the particular road, types of vehicles and the speed at which they are travelling.

Wirral's director of technical Services, Dave Green said: "The cables on the Moreton / Birkenhead flyover are automatic counting loops, which provide information on the types of vehicles using the road and the speeds at which they are travelling.

"The information will be used as part of a borough-wide review of speed limits, which is being undertaken in partnership with Merseyside Police."

Wirral's cabinet member for Streetscene & transport services, Councillor Jean Quinn said:

"This study will not examine individual motorist's speeds but will review existing speed limits on A, B and some C roads. This review will not result in additional speed cameras.

"We continuously strive to make our roads safer and are committed to reducing the number of people killed or seriously injured on our roads.

If you hit a child at 30mph they have an 80% chance of living. If you hit them at 40mph they have an 80% chance of dying.

"We are only gathering data from the traffic counting loops to establish whether the speed limits are appropriate based on the streetscape, local conditions for residents and accident records over the last three years.

"If the review shows that the limits are not appropriate in following Government Guidance then a formal process has to be followed to change them. In this process, there is opportunity for people to object to changes and a formal process for handling these objections is undertaken."
