Campaigners, councillors and library users at Wallasey Village were today celebrating the decision by Culture Secretary Andy Burnham to call a halt to the closures.

Today had been planned as the last day in the history of the branch library and staff had already been ordered to fill boxes with books for disposal later.

An action day, organised by Liscard Councillor and Conservative parliamentary candidate Leah Fraser, to protest against the closure quickly turned into a celebration as news of the Secretary of State’s intervention spread.

Leah said: "The relief on the faces of the staff and the customers says it all.

"Nobody I have met wanted this library to close and it looks like the Culture Department in London shares those concerns.

"Andy Burnham’s decision blows a hole through the Labour and Liberal Democrat administration’s whole argument that services won’t be affected or that somehow 'buildings don’t matter'.

"The people of Wallasey love our libraries and we will continue to keep up the pressure until these cuts are dead and buried, and if that means the leadership of the council goes too, then so be it."
