POLICE have a launched a fresh appeal for information about one of Wirral's most appalling unsolved murders - that of Peter Singleton, gunned down in front of his partner and child in broad daylight in West Kirby.

Today marks the sixth anniversary of the death of the 26-year-old father of one, whose 2003 killing stunned Wirral.

Peter was shot by a masked gunman just after 7.30pm on March 27, 2003, as he stood with his girlfriend and their three year old son on Column Road.

He suffered injuries to his head and stomach and was taken to Arrowe Park Hospital where he later died.

As part of the murder inquiry detectives travelled to Scotland, Manchester, the North-east and Kent.

The investigation into Peter's death remains on-going and officers are continuing to seek the public's help to gather more information about the white Vauxhall Astra van which was used in the murder, and to trace the two men seen leaving the scene.

The movements of the white Vauxhall Astra van used by the gunman and his accomplice to travel to and from the scene of the shooting in Column Road has been an important line of the inquiry.

After the shooting, the van was seen driving off along Grange Cross Lane and was found burnt-out shortly afterwards in Carr Lane, Moreton.

Two men of "youthful appearance" wearing dark clothing were seen entering Westry Close from the footpath which leads from Carr Lane, and they ran off in the direction of Millhouse Lane.

DCI Ian Mulcahey said: "We are certain that Peter was targeted specifically, and we need the assistance of the public to help us with the inquiry.

"Firstly, where did the two men go after they left the white Vauxhall Astra van on Carr Lane?

"It is possible that after the van was set on fire, they left in another vehicle, which was already parked in the area.

"Perhaps someone saw two men acting suspiciously near Westry Close on the evening of March 27, and can tell us what they saw.

"Secondly, when the shooting took place, the van was using false registration plates, number KP52 XGD.

"The blank registration plates are unique, with a green band around the edge of the plate face.

"These were made and sold to traders across the UK by one company - Signam Ltd, in Warwick.

"If you are a trader who bought plates from Signam to make up in your shop, you may be able to help us.

"If we can find where the plates were made, this will help us trace the person who used them on the van.

DCI Mulcahey added: "We remain steadfastly committed to finding those responsible for Peter's death.

"I would like to thank everyone who has come forward to help us over the last six years to help us.

"Anyone who thinks they can help should be reassured that every piece of information is investigated and no piece of evidence is too small as it enables us to continue to build a picture of what happened that night, and help us track down and arrest Peter's killers."

Officers have re-issued an e-fit of a man who they would like to speak to with regards to the shooting.

Anyone with information is urged to call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
