A high-achieving Wirral mum has won a top academic nursing award.

Laura Brown from Claughton Village, was awarded the faculty of health study prize at Edge Hill University for gaining the highest marks among 150 students working towards degrees or diplomas in nursing.

The dedicated 27-year-old initially enrolled on a diploma course but was persuaded to switch to the higher level BSc degree programme after impressing tutors with her talent and drive. She proved herself to be an exceptional student, achieving First Class honours and the top marks of her year. Laura was presented with a certificate and cheque for £100 by new Edge Hill chancellor, professor Tanya Byron.

Laura, who has a five-year-old daughter Lily-Mai said: “I was extremely shocked at winning the prize but very proud.

“I worked really hard during my degree but was also very lucky to have an amazing personal tutor and very supportive parents, who helped a great deal with childcare.”

After finishing her studies, Laura had the pick of the jobs as three employers came forward to offer her a position.

Ultimately she opted for The Royal Liverpool University Hospital where she is currently a registered staff nurse on the emergency surgical admissions unit and says she “absolutely loves it.”
