THE council must do more to combat the problem of fly-tipping.

That's the view of Moreton and Saughall Massie councillor Chris Blakeley after learning of another serious incident of fly tipping involving what appears to a systematic dumping of waste in Tarran Way industrial estate, Moreton, pictured right.

“Fly-tippers blight the environment and are the scourge of our communities,” said Cllr Blakeley.

“We need to catch the culprits and make sure that we prosecute companies and individuals who commit fly tipping offences until the message that we will not tolerate this envirocrime in Wirral is firmly understood.”

He added: “Fly-tipping is an ongoing problem throughout Wirral. It costs the local authority hundreds of thousands of pounds of council taxpayers money every year to clean-up.

“Illegally dumped waste is not only an eyesore, but it can damage land, watercourses and be harmful to the public who come into contact with it.”

He has now contacted the council and asked them to have the offending material removed as soon as possible.

He will also urge the council to look toward a long-term solution in dealing with the growing menace.

It is not just industrial fly-tipping like this that causes problems across Wirral.

Since the introduction of alternate weekly household refuse collections there have been reports of general waste being dumped, too.

While Wirral’s recycling figures have increased dramatically, many householders remain unhappy with the fortnightly collection of food waste and the Globe has been inundated with letters, emails and phone calls from readers still complaining about missed collections and resulting maggot infestations in the green wheelie bins.
